KICKBOXING in Romania 🇷🇴
WKN: The Federation That Made Kickboxing Popular 25 years ago !
Romania 🇷🇴 has become one of the strongest nations in kickboxing history, and this rise is closely connected to the pioneering role of the WKN. More than 25 years ago, the WKN was the federation that truly made kickboxing popular in Romania, at a time when the sport was still developing and had limited structure and visibility.
Under the leadership of Stéphane Cabrera, President of the WKN, together with Eduard Irimia, the sport was professionally organized and brought to a national and international audience. Their collaboration led to the creation of LK-Local Kombat, which later evolved into SK-Superkombat, helping establish Romania as a major combat sports hub.
✨This era produced the “Romanian Supremacy,” with iconic fights such as Cătălin Smărăndescu vs Cyprian Sora and the WKN Intercontinental title clash between Cătălin Moroșanu and Gary Goodridge, events that filled arenas and marked European kickboxing history.
✨The WKN World Championship of Ionuț Iftimoaie drew tens of thousands of spectators, confirming Romania’s status as a key country in the sport, with hundreds of high-level fights organized under the WKN banner.
✨ The WKN World Championship of Ionuț Iftimoaie also stands as a historic milestone, attracting tens of thousands of spectators and becoming the LARGEST kickboxing events ever held in Europe in terms of attendance. Across this period, hundreds of high-level fights were organized in Romania under the WKN banner, showcasing elite competition at the highest level.
✨A major international highlight was the fight of Samir Mohamed, “The Little Prince,” broadcast live on Eurosport, marking his 100th professional fight and his fifth world title challenge.
Broadcast live on Eurosport, these events reached millions of viewers across Europe and Asia, highlighting not only the level of competition but also the central role of the WKN in establishing and promoting kickboxing in Romania.
Today, Romania remains a historic stronghold of kickboxing, a legacy built by the WKN through vision, structure, and landmark events that shaped generations of fighters and elevated the sport worldwide.
